Renovations at Sarnia high school boost construction totals

Improvements at Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School (AMSS) gave Sarnia building permits a boost last month.

Sarnia City Hall issued a total of 51 permits in March, with a total value of over $17.3 million. That's more than double the 22 permits issued in February totaling just over $8.3 million.

Renovations at AMSS include the removal of the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) roof deck and replacement with new steel roof deck over the gymnasium and tech wing.

The existing change rooms will also be upgraded and the HVAC replaced.

A $2.1 million permit was also issued for renovations and upgrades at 162 Lochiel Street, the site of the former Bayside Centre.

Plans include basement renovations for updated office spaces, including selective demolition, asbestos abatement, new doors with controlled access, interior finishes, fire protection, underground plumbing, above ground plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and controls.

The monthly statistics also include a $2.6 million permit for refrigeration system upgrades at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

One permit was issued for a single-family dwelling in March, bringing the year-to-date total for new homes to three.

Year-over-year construction activity in Sarnia is well ahead of last year's pace with a total of 99 permits issued so far in 2026, compared to 70 during the first three months of the year in 2025.
