Veteran Sarnia-Lambton politician announces retirement

City/County Councillor Dave Boushy is retiring after spending over 50 years working in public service.

The 94-year-old politician announced his retirement and decision not to seek re-election by hand-delivering a letter to Sarnia News Today on Wednesday, April 15.

"Serving the community has been his greatest honour. He always believed that leadership is about listening, working together, and doing what is right for the people," read the letter. "Sarnia has given so much to him and his family, and he is forever grateful for the opportunity to serve the community."

Before he became involved in municipal politics, Boushy served as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) from 1995 to 1999.

"Whether at Queen's Park or around the council table, he approached every issue with the same belief that public service is about community first," the letter continued.

At one point, Boushy also represented the area on a global stage. In 2016, he was selected to attend a conference in Beirut, Lebanon, where he was born.

Boushy declined an interview.

The sitting members of council will continue to serve in regular meetings until the summer break.

The 2026 municipal election is slated for October 26.
