The mayor of St. Clair Township is welcoming the prospect of CF Industries possibly building a new urea liquor upgrade plant at its Courtright facility.
Jeff Agar said a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study is currently underway.
"It's such good news! It's not a for sure thing yet, but just to undertake the study for it is a good sign," Agar said. "I'm excited! It's great for St. Clair, it's great for the community, it's great for all the fab (fabrication) shops around, the trades, and suppliers. Hopefully down the line, it gets approved."
In a recent financial update, CF Industries said it signed an agreement with thyssenkrupp Uhde, a global engineering company, for the FEED study.
"The project, if a positive final investment decision (FID) is reached, is expected to add incremental [Diesel Exhaust Fluid] capacity of more than 400,000 tons per year. FID is expected in 2027," read the CF Industries report.
Agar said, to his knowledge, no other studies or assessments will be conducted in the coming months before a final decision is made.
"I'm so impressed with CF," said Agar. "They've been around for 60 years in our municipality. They're a great corporate citizen, and they do so much for our community. I'm happy for them to be able to even think about doing something like this."
Agar said the company has his full support.
News of the possible project posted to Agar's Facebook page also appeared to have been well received.
"Just from the outburst of people, everybody's excited," he said.
According to its website, CF Industries is a leading global manufacturer of hydrogen and nitrogen products for clean energy, fertilizer, emissions abatement, and other industrial applications.
Sarnia News Today reached out to CF Industries for comment and was told the company had no additional information to add.
