Rotary Club prepares to dish up pancakes for Mackinac race

The Rotary Club of Sarnia is encouraging residents to bike to Point Edward's waterfront for the annual pancake breakfast, which coincides with the Bayview Mackinac Boat Race.

The Rotary's breakfast fundraiser will be set up under the Blue Water Bridge on Saturday, July 18, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

New this year, a supervised bike corral will be set up near the tented dining area.

"It's part of our environmentally friendly approach," said Rotary Spokesperson Myles Vanni. "But also, we encourage people to bring their own dishes and we have a rinse station there, that way we're not having to use paper or plastic."

Each year, the rotary club typically serves more than 2,000 breakfasts, with the help of approximately 100 volunteers, and raises $10,000 to $15,000.

"We'll donate $100,000 to $200,000 every year back into the community, and this is one of the fundraisers that we use to raise money for charities," Vanni said.

He called it a great community tradition.

"People love to come down, have pancakes for breakfast, and then watch all the boats," Vanni said.

Now in its 102nd year, the nautical competition is known as the longest running long distance freshwater yacht race in the world, travelling from Port Huron, Michigan to Mackinac.

The full breakfast includes pancakes (gluten-free available upon request), sausage, and a drink.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Advance tickets are available to purchase at DeGroot's Nurseries, Pathways Health Centre for Children, Great Lakes Refill, Manleys in Point Edward, and through the rotary club's website.
