A reminder of how important life jackets can be after two people in the St. Clair River were rescued Tuesday night.
Point Edward Fire and Rescue was dispatched at around 8 p.m. after two people, who appeared to be in distress, were seen holding onto a Sea-Doo just south of the Blue Water Bridge.
The two were unable to get out of the water on their own.
A rescue swimmer dove in and helped the two people onto Marine 2. They were taken back to shore and declined EMS.
Officials said the two were part of a group who had rented Sea-Doos, but they ended up in the water after being ejected.
"Their Sea-Doo drifted away from them in the current, and they were unable to get back on," read Point Edward Fire and Rescue's Facebook post. "Another Sea-Doo from their group was able to get to them and they held onto the side until firefighters arrived on scene."
Point Edward Fire and Rescue said eventually, all watercrafts were secured and returned to Sarnia Bay.
All parties wore personal flotation devices.
First responders and agencies recently highlighted the importance of wearing life jackets during National Drowning Prevention Week.
Earlier this month, West Region OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said nearly 80 per cent of all boating deaths investigated in 2025 involved people who were not wearing a life jacket. Additionally, adult men accounted for almost 90 per cent of all boating fatalities on OPP-patrolled waters last year.
