Hide your treasure as Captain Kidd is making his way to Corunna this weekend.
The festivities take place over several days, and for the 41st annual event, things are expected to be bigger and better than before.
"We have our kid-friendly events starting Thursday night. We've got our movie night. We're doing Zootopia Two, and in conjunction with that, we're bringing the zoo to you. So a local animal rescue zoo that brings out animals is coming," said Chairperson for Captain Kidd Days Geoff Dale. "Friday night, Captain Kidd shows up at the Ferry Dock at 6 p.m. for his main arrival. He comes down Hill Street to the park, where the official opening of Captain Kidd Days starts. So our best-dressed pirate, our dignitaries' remarks. Our ball tournament starts. We have a junior and senior battle of the bands. Then our evening entertainment begins. Then Saturday we have a full day of tournaments."
Thursday July 30, through to Sunday August 2, is packed full of events with sports tournaments, a kids zone, inflatables, food trucks, a parade and live music. There's something for everyone.
"We have a skateboard demonstration. We have a youth maker market. We have other sports throughout the day, a soccer tournament, ultimate frisbee, karate, jelly ball, and other activities; then Sunday we finish off with our fireworks and some evening entertainment," said Dale. "It's 19 plus on Friday after 9 p.m., and after 8 p.m. on Saturday, then Sunday is all ages. So we encourage families to come out and watch the fireworks."
Saturday morning at 11 a.m. the parade goes through the heart of Corunna starting at Thompson Gardens, along Lyndoch Street, up Fane Street, and ends at the Corunna Athletic Park. If parades aren't your thing, there's also a car show happening as well as live music.
"Friday night we have 89 Next and Painkiller Jane. Saturday we have Song Machine and Highway 21, and then Sunday we have our Battle of the Bands winner opening our night, and then Upside of Maybe closing," he said.
The entire weekend is made possible by community organizers and sponsors.
"Shell's our title sponsor for I think the 15th straight year, and it just goes to show how spoiled and blessed we are that this past year we've had our most sponsors ever, and it's not been a fantastic year for the economy, so our sponsors continually having our back really helps us to grow and run this event."
