Structural issues delay reopening of Moore Sports Complex pool

Unexpected challenges will delay the reopening of the Moore Sports Complex pool.

St. Clair Township Mayor Jeff Agar said underlying issues were uncovered during the renovation project.

"They started their construction, it's been going along pretty good, but then as you open the walls up... there was some areas of the structure that required additional reinforcement," Agar said. "It's one of the old stories. Once you open up old [construction], you've got to replace it so it's going to last. So, it's going to take a little bit longer that what was anticipated."

Agar said no dangerous materials, like asbestos, were discovered.

"No, no, it's pretty much just the structure," Agar said. "It's just more maintenance than anything, but it takes time to do. You can't really tell that stuff until you open it, but then you can't proceed until you do this, because you want everything all perfect so it's going to last another 50 years, or however many years."

At this time, Agar said a timeline for completion is unknown.

"We really don't know yet," he said. "It won't be a year or anything like that, but I think [construction] was set to be done by the end of summer, the first of September, but it's going to be a little bit longer."

As a result, the pool, changerooms, and fitness centre will remain closed until the work is complete.

Last July, the Ontario government awarded the township a $1 million grant to upgrade the facility.

In addition to the pool renovation, roof and arena upgrades were also planned.

The sports complex opened in 1969 and the pool was added in 1975.
