Condolences are pouring in from across Lambton County after the death of a former Oil Springs mayor and healthcare advocate.
According to his obituary, Owen Byers passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, August 10, at the age of 86.
Byers was first elected to Oil Springs council in 1976 and served as the village's reeve/mayor for 14 years, starting in 1979.
He was also the warden of Lambton County in 1993.
His obituary said Byers was a retired driver with Suncor and was a dedicated member of Alexandra-Inwood Lodge No. 158 and Lambton Shrine Club for many years.
"Throughout his life, Owen valued community, friendship, and service, leaving behind many lasting connections and memories," read the post.
The Bluewater Health Foundation said Byers was a "remarkable advocate for local healthcare and a longtime friend of our foundation."
"Owen was a dedicated member of the CEEH Foundation Board, serving as chair for many years and championing the importance of strong, accessible healthcare in Petrolia and our rural communities," it said. "Owen’s commitment to his community will be greatly missed. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him."
Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said he was saddened by the news.
"He was a congenial man who loved his community and county and gave a lot back of community service to both," said Bradley in a social media post.
