Fire destroys golf course clubhouse near Bayfield

Ontario's fire marshal will join the investigation into the cause of a fire that reduced the clubhouse of a Bayfield area golf course to rubble.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the Bluewater Golf Course and Campground just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday. When crews arrived the clubhouse was engulfed in flames with thick black smoke billowing into the air.

No one was hurt, but the building was destroyed, Huron County OPP said.

Sections of Bluewater Highway (Highway 21) and Bayfield Road were closed while firefighters battled the blaze. They reopened early Thursday morning.

Police have cordoned off the area and the Office of the Fire Marshal, along with local fire investigators, will be probing the cause of the fire.

Bluewater Golf Course posted on its social media channels that it will be closed until further notice.

"Thank you to our staff for their hard work and quick response. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the first responders who attended the fire so quickly," the post said. "Your prompt response and dedication are truly appreciated."

It added that additional updates will be posted when information becomes available.
