The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to exercise caution as the majority of Ontario students will return to school next week.
Most school districts will welcome students back on September 8, which police say will result in increased traffic volumes near schools, bus stops, and pedestrian crossings.
Motorists are urged to slow down and stay alert as school zones become busier during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Drivers are also reminded that they should be prepared to stop when approaching a school bus displaying flashing amber lights.
OPP say once a school bus has stopped and its red overhead lights are flashing, drivers are required by law to stop and remain until the lights are no longer flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn. On roads without a physical median, traffic must stop in both directions.
"Whether travelling by vehicle, bicycle, school bus, or on foot, everyone has a responsibility to help keep children safe," read a release from the OPP Media Service.
