After narrowly missing the target last year, the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has once again set a fundraising goal of $1.5 million for its fall campaign.
The announcement was made during the Sarnia Sting's annual Black and White game, in support of the charitable organization.
Last year, despite strong community support, the initiative finished at 97 per cent, or $42,682 away from reaching its goal.
Spokesman Bruce McDonald said they're still funding 27 programs at 16 different community agencies.
They include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Red Cross, Habitat For Humanity, Lambton Elderly Outreach and the Salvation Army.
"We had two programs combine within the last year, so it used to be 28 and now it's 27, but the services are all still there," said McDonald. "We set this $1.5 million goal because we know the needs in our community continue to be significant, and we want to make sure we're doing our part to meet those needs. At the same time, we feel this is an ambitious but achievable goal when our community comes together."
McDonald said there are three key areas they support.
"We're focused on providing services for our aging population, the kids in the community and we also support vulnerable populations as well," he said.
The campaign officially launches with the Annual Day of Caring on Tuesday, September 15.

As of Monday, they were sitting at $117,474 or eight per cent of the target.
