The Michigan Department of Transportation is warning commuters now that it will close border crossings between Ontario and Michigan on Friday morning in memory of those lost on September 11, 2001.
Traffic at the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, and the Ambassador Bridge will be cleared before 8:46 a.m., the time the first passenger jet slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre in New York City.
The border at the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge and Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia will also briefly close.
Motorists should expect a half-hour delay between the time border traffic comes to a standstill and when the crossings open back up.
As the flag is raised at border crossings, Taps will be played.
M-DOT is telling cross-border commuters to plan accordingly for the closures.
Normal operations will resume after the observance.
