$10K goal set for Trail and Ale fundraiser

Organizers of Rayjon Share Care's annual Trail and Ale walk/run, highlighting local trails and breweries, are hoping to see registration 'fill up' this year.

Race participants will meet at the Howard Watson Trail, across from Michigan Avenue, on Saturday, September 19.

Race Director Erin Gilbert said they're aiming to have just over 200 participants.

"We were fairly close to selling out last year," she said.

Last year, the event raised $10,000, which is the goal for this year.

Registration can be done online through Rayjon's website. Kids 14 and under can participate in the 5K option for free with a registered adult.

"One-hundred per cent of the profits will go to Rayjon Share Care. They've been working in Sarnia since 1986 and they work with their Haitian and Dominican partners," Gilbert said. "They provide nutrition programs, adult literacy classes, eyeglass programs, and many more options."

Gilbert said volunteers involved with the charitable organization are planning another trip to Dominican Republic in November.

The unique Trail and Ale fundraiser showcases the Howard Watson and Blackwell Trails while also promoting local breweries. Gilbert said participants 19+ will receive a beer in their race kits.

"Refined Fool is our biggest sponsor, we also have Imperial City Brew House, Stonepicker Brewing Company, and Point Brewing Sarnia. So it depends on what you get in your race kit," she said.

As for the race itself, some adjustments have been made.

"We always do our five and 10 kilometre route for our participants. This year, we have upgraded, we have a 15 kilometre route, and we've added an extra water station and honey gels for all of our participants at the water stations as well," Gilbert said. "It's like fast sugar to the bloodstream to help runners keep going so they don't hit what we call 'the wall.'"

Runners will begin the race between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., while walkers will start at 9 a.m.

Participant prizes will be handed out during the after-party at Refined Fool's Sports location on London Road, starting at 11:30 a.m.

Those who can't attend the race on September 19 are encouraged to register for the virtual event online.

Rayjon Share Care celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year.
