A race has been declared for the chief's position at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
Incumbent Janelle Nahmabin is being challenged in the October election by former Chief Chris Plain, who resigned from the role in 2024 after being elected the deputy grand council chief of Anishinabek Nation.
Nahmabin was named acting chair of Aamjiwnaang band council shortly afterward, and was acclaimed to the chief position for the 2024-2026 term that September.
Meanwhile, 18 band members are seeking one of nine councillor positions.
A meet the candidates night is planned on Monday, September 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community and Youth Centre.
Organizers said candidates will each received five minutes to share their campaign platform.
Polls will be open at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day, Friday, October 16.
Electoral Officer Vaughn Johnston said ballots will be counted at the community centre immediately after the poll closes and results will be shared on social media after counting is complete.
Johnston said any elector unable to attend in person may vote by mail.
