More than 3,500 people in Sarnia-Lambton are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, a number that affects thousands of local family members and care partners.
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, the Alzheimer Society Sarnia-Lambton is inviting the public to attend a special flag-raising ceremony and community gathering on Monday, September 21.
The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Seaway Centre Parkette Flag Court, located in Centennial Park at Lochiel Street.
“World Alzheimer’s Day is an important opportunity for our community to come together and show people affected by dementia that they are seen, valued, and supported,” said Director of Fund Development and Community Engagement Marie Marcy-Smids. “The flag raising is a visible reminder that dementia touches thousands of people in our community and that no one should have to face the journey alone.”
Local physician Dr. Blake Pearson will address dementia prevention, practical steps for supporting cognitive health, and emerging developments in brain health research.
Kerry Gabriel of the NuSarnia Foundation will also highlight a new collaborative initiative with the society, introducing the Alzheimer Bench, a physical symbol dedicated to fostering community support, visibility, and inclusion for those living with dementia and their care partners.
The local chapter of the Alzheimer's Society provides programs, education, resources and support to people living with dementia and their care partners throughout Lambton County.
Meanwhile, this year's global campaign focuses directly on early diagnosis, highlighting that spotting the warning signs early -- like memory loss, confusion, or mood changes -- can unlock critical support and treatment options much sooner.
Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with dementia, a figure projected to triple by 2050.
