Community members will have a chance later this month to learn about fish and wildlife research throughout the St. Clair River.
The Canadian Remedial Action Plan Implementation Committee will host its fourth annual Honouring the St. Clair River event on October 21, at Bogey's Inn & Venue in Sombra.
St. Clair River Remedial Action Plan Coordinator Kelly Johnson, with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, said speakers from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and the University of Windsor will attend.
"This event serves as an opportunity to update the community on progress being made towards delisting of the St. Clair River as an area of concern," Johnson said in an emailed statement. "It has been a long road to get to this point, but we currently only have three of the original beneficial use impairments to redesignate. As we near delisting, it’s important for the community to know what has been done to arrive at this point."
The St. Clair River was identified as an area of concern by the Canadian and U.S. governments in 1987 due to severe water quality degradation related to industrial and urban development, read a media release.
Since then, various groups have collaborated in an effort to address environmental issues, with the goal of having the St. Clair River removed from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern
Johnson said as of October 8, there were only about 20 tickets left.
The free event will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and presentations will begin at 7 p.m.
With limited space, residents were encouraged to register by October 13, either online or by contacting Johnson at [email protected] or 519-245-3710 ext. 218.
