Sarnia recruiting citizens for police board, advisory committees

If you're looking to make a direct impact on Sarnia's community oversight, the city may have a seat at the table with your name on it.

The City of Sarnia is recruiting for the Sarnia Police Service Board and Communications Manager Steve Henschel said it's a fairly easy process to apply.

"We have an online application," Henschel said. "Individuals can go to www.sarnia.ca/SPSB2026 and from there they can read a bit about what were recruiting for, the deadlines, and access our online application form. Applications close at 4:30 p.m. on November 4, so we encourage anybody who's interested to go on there and apply."

However, he said certain individuals aren't eligible to serve on the board.

"A judge or a justice of the peace, a member of a police service, special constable or First Nation officer, any person who practices criminal law as a defence counsel or prosecutor, and they're all listed on the application form," Henschel said.

He said individuals with experience on a board, finances, or community involvement would make a great fit.

"Generally what's happened most recently is council has appointed a citizen appointment review committee of some of its members. That committee will review the applications, conduct interviews and then make a recommendation to council for approval of those citizens appointed to the board," he said.

Henschel said they usually get about 20 to 30 applications for the two year term.

A police check and other training is required should you be appointed.

If you're not interested in helping shape local police operations, the city is also recruiting for the Committee of Adjustment, Accessibility Advisory Committee, Property Standards, and Court of Revision Under the Drainage Act.

More information about those positions can be found here.
