It might be October, but organizers with the Celebration of Lights are already getting in the Christmas spirit.
Volunteers are needed to start moving displays to Sarnia's Centennial Park on Saturday, October 24.
"We ask people to meet at Sandrin Services on Exmouth Street at 9 a.m. That's where we have everything stored, and we need trucks and trailers. We ask that people with their trailers be at least 14 feet long. Open trailers are best because some of the parts just have different sizes, and about 20 volunteers is all we need," said Board Chair Dean Holtz.
When it comes to set-up time, things are getting started a little early this year to give crews more time to get things in place.
"We've moved everything up two weeks this year because we felt over the last few years that the timeline we normally would have was a little, a little too little time, if you will, for everybody to feel secure about having everything ready."
If you can't make it out to help get things moved this month, there's still lots of other days to help get things ready to go before the opening ceremonies.
"November 10th at 9 a.m. also at Centennial Park, we have Sterling Crane coming out to do the heavy lifting of our five largest, heaviest displays. We just need about 20 people to help guide those displays in place," said Holtz. "Then on Saturday, November 14, that's the second community setup date where we finish setting up all the displays and lights, and we'll be stringing a lot of lights around trees. So there's a lot of work with that. It takes a lot of time, and then last but certainly not least, Saturday, November 28, are the opening ceremonies."
The opening ceremonies will include Christmas caroling, horse and buggy rides and of course the turning on of all the lights.
