A Corunna man is in court again, just over a month after it was determined he will face yet another trial in the death of his common-law wife.
In a decision released on Friday, September 25, Ontario's Appeal Court set aside the 2023 acquittal of Shawn Trowbridge, which followed a six-week trial and two days of jury deliberations.
Trowbridge was originally found not guilty in the late 2020 death of Cheryl VanHuizen.
While Crown prosecutors appealed for a new first-degree murder trial, a five-judge panel ruled Trowbridge will instead be retried on manslaughter, modifying the legal standard regarding consent to harm during sexual activity.
Trowbridge is scheduled for a preliminary court appearance in Sarnia on October 27, with an official trial date expected to be set on November 20.
