Trick-or-treating will start early in Oil Springs on Saturday.
The Oil Museum of Canada will host its annual Cackling Cauldrons event on Saturday, October 31, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Educational Program Coordinator Christina Sydorko said it's exciting to host the event on Halloween this year.
High school students have volunteered to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters outside of historic buildings on the museum grounds. There will also be Halloween-themed crafts and activities, such as a witch hat ring toss and bobbing for apples on a string.
"The bobbing for apples is hilarious to see kids trying to catch an apple with their teeth as it hangs from a string," said Sydorko. "It's all good fun!"
Sydorko said Cackling Cauldrons started as a way to provide the door-to-door trick-or-treat experience for kids who live in rural areas and typically have to drive to experience the Halloween tradition.
"The event's been getting bigger and bigger. Last year we had about 400; this year we're expecting about 500 [attendees]," she said.
Costumes are strongly encouraged.
The event is free as it was sponsored by Pembina. Registration is not required.
The Village of Oil Springs’ Children’s Halloween Party will also be held on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oil Springs Youth Centre. Games, popcorn, and candy bags will be available.
