Firework safety reminder ahead of Diwali

The Festival of Lights, also known as Diwali, will be celebrated in Sarnia this weekend.

It is a multi-day religious festival, observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists, which commemorates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Fireworks are often set off during the festival, and Sarnia Fire Rescue wants people to stay safe.

"Diwali has been declared a special occasion day, which means you can legally set off fireworks on private property. Just follow the guidelines and bylaws," said Public Education Officer Mike Otis. "If you are going to set off fireworks, they can be set off on the day of, the day before, or the day after. Fireworks can be sold the seven days leading up to a special occasion day, and there are fines for breaking any of the rules within the bylaws. They range from $300 to $2,000."

Anyone planning to set off fireworks for the festival is also reminded that they are responsible if anything happens.

"You can't set them off in the park or on streets or anything like that. And keep in mind, you are going to be liable for any damages caused, any injuries, etc," said Otis.

All firework displays must end by 11 p.m. on the designated special occasion days.

Anyone with questions or concerns can contact Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services.

The Sarnia Hindu Society is hosting its Diwali celebration on Saturday, November 14 at Great Lakes Secondary School.

The event features a dinner, music and live entertainment.
