Flint Announces Coaching Staff

A few days after naming a general manager, the Flint Firebirds have announced their coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Ryan Oulahen will come on as head coach after six years as an assistant Coach in North Bay. The 31-year-old is a former captain of the Battalion. He is a Detroit Red Wings draft pick and spent four seasons with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, including one as captain.

Eric Wellwood joins the team as an associated coach after two years in a similar role in Oshawa. The 26-year-old has won three memorial cups, two as a player and one as as assistant coach with the Generals.

“Ryan and Eric are both young yet experienced, bringing tremendous enthusiasm, leadership and a strong foundation in junior hockey to the Firebirds’ bench,” said George Burnett, General Manager Flint Firebirds. “My role is to support Ryan and Eric as they lead our group of current and prospective players."

Burnett was named general manager May 17 as the franchise restructures its front office, hoping to add some stability in the organization after a inaugural season in Flint that was filled with off ice distractions.
