Hughes Shines, Sting Fall To Spitfires In OT

The Sarnia Sting (12-7-3-0) fell 2-1 in overtime to the Spitfires (14-4-2-0) in OHL action in Windsor Friday night.

Sting goalie Aidan Hughes was stellar in net and made some big saves, stopping 39 of Windsor's 41 shots. The Sting managed 19 shots on Spitfires goalie Mario Culina.

Anthony Salinitri scored his 10th goal of the season to put the Sting ahead 1-0 at the 14:52 mark of the first period. Jordan Kyrou and Troy Lajeunesse each picked up an assist on the play.

Former Steelheads defenceman Sean Day tied the game for Windsor in the second period with his 7th of the year.

The Spitfires appeared to pull ahead 2-1 on a buzzer beating goal to end the second frame. The play was overturned however, and the teams went to the dressing room tied 1-1. After a scoreless third period, 2017 NHL draft hopeful Gabriel Vilardi won the game for the Spitfires with just 48 seconds remaining in overtime.

The OT loss gives the Sting 27 points on the season, three back of Windsor and two behind Sault St. Marie in the West Division standings.

Sarnia will host the Erie Otters Saturday night at 7:00pm at Progressive Auto Sales Arena on 103.9FM-1070AM CHOK.
