Local Athletes At National Championship

Corunna's Derek Drouin headlines a long list of local athletes at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa this week.

1,303 athletes are competing at the championship that runs until July 9.

The Olympic gold medalist will competing in the senior high jump event and won't be the only Drouin in competition. His sister, Jillian Drouin, will be competing in senior women's high jump. Jillian will also be competing in the women's heptathlon, qualifying for her high jump event is Thursday, the heptathlon gets underway Tuesday afternoon. The men's high jump qualifiers are Tuesday, with the finals set for Saturday.

Several others will be competing in the Under-20 age group.

Petrolia's Marissa Mueller competes in Javelin and Sarnia's Sebastian Smith is in high jump. Mueller is a recent graduate of LCCVI while Smith attended Northern. Both medaled at the 2017 OFSAA Championships in Belleville. Finals in both events are scheduled for Saturday.

Mackenzie Mullen is in a pair of events, women's discuss and hammer throw.

Johnny Vanos competes in three events, men's hammer throw, discuss, and shot putt.  Zion Webb also competing in the shot putt event.

Gates for the three-day fair will open at the Wyoming Fair Grounds on Main Street on Friday, September 18, at 5 p.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m.
