It was a defensive battle, but the Sarnia Sting fell on the short end of it Sunday afternoon.
The Kitchener Rangers only needed one goal to beat the Sting 1-0 at Progressive Auto Sales Arena. The Rangers use the win to pull into a tie with Sarnia for sixth place in the OHL Western Conference with 53 points each.
There was no scoring in the opening period, but Kitchener was aggressive near the crease, outshooting Sarnia 16-4. The Rangers had two power-play chances in the first frame to the Sting's one.
The middle stanza was scoreless until literally the last second when the Rangers broke the stalemate on a Greg Meireles power-play goal. That ended up being the game for Kitchener.
The Sting were unable to score the equaliser in the third period, though they dominated by shots 14-5.
Ethan Langevin stopped all but one of the 29 shots he faced in goal for the Sting and was the game's number-one star. Luke Richardson stopped all 23 shots he faced for the Rangers to get the shutout.
Sarnia heads to Windsor Thursday night for a Valentine's Day tussle with the Spitfires.
