Weir finishes runner-up to fellow Canuck

A fellow Canadian stood in the way of Mike Weir's second career PGA Tour Champions victory Sunday.

Stephen Ames finished 12-under par at the Principal Charity Classic from Wakonda Golf Course in Iowa, edging Weir by a single stroke.

With the win, the 57-year-old Ames became the first Canadian to win twice on the seniors tour.  His first victory came back in 2017.

Weir, 51, has been one of the best golfers on the Champions Tour since joining the 50-and-over circuit last summer.  In 17 events played, the Sarnia-native hasn't missed a cut, he has eight top 10 finishes, he's been the runner-up at three events, and he has one victory.

Weir won eight times on the PGA Tour including becoming the first Canadian to win a major tournament, the Masters in 2003.
