Lambton Lions bring home silver

A historic season has come to an end for the Lambton Lions Women's Basketball Team.

Though the result wasn't what they were hoping for, the Lions won a silver medal at the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships in Lloydminster, Alberta over the weekend. The team fell just short, losing the final game to the Lakeland Rustlers 64-55.

There was a bit of back and forth, with the lead changing hands four times throughout the game.

After going down by double-digits late in the first quarter, Lambton didn't give up, going into the second half trailing by only four points.

Halfway into the fourth quarter, the Lions led 51-50 but that was short-lived as the Rustlers stormed back to take the win.

The Lions made more free throws (76.5 per cent) and 3-pointers (22.2 per cent) on average, but the Rustlers outplayed them. The hometown team managed turnovers better and scored far more inside the paint.

Forward Brett Fischer, of Wallaceburg, led the Lions with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Following the game, three Lions were honoured with Tournament All-Star awards. Guard Maddy Bishop, of Windsor, was named a Second Team Tournament All-Star. Fischer and wing Breanna Pretty, of Sarnia, were named First Team Tournament All-Stars.
