Former Sarnia Legionnaire Player Dies

A former Sarnia Legionnaire player who went on to play pro hockey has died at the age of 75 after a courageous battle recovering from heart surgery.

In 1957, at the age of 15, George "Duke" Harris won a Junior B championship with the Sarnia Legionnaires and went on to win a Memorial Cup with the St. Catharines Tee Pees.

He had a successful career in the Western Hockey League, American Hockey League, and World Hockey Association. He captured a pair of Calder Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Hornets, and Rochester Americans.

In all, he tallied 53 goals and 100 points in 193 games in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and Chicago Cougars.

He also played 26 games in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota North Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at the DJ Robb Funeral Home and Cremation Centre on Tuesday, August 8 at 11:30am.
