LaSalle Supports Leamington OB

LaSalle Town Council is the latest to support calls to keep the obstetrics unit at Leamington District Memorial Hospital open.

Essex County Council, Kingsville Council and Leamington Council have already signed a resolution asking the Erie-St. Clair Local Health Integration Network to rule against a hospital board of directors' proposal to shut it down March 31.

Mayor Ken Antaya admits most expecting mothers in LaSalle already deliver their babies at Windsor Regional Hospital but says it's the principal of the matter. "It's something that we have to think of the region as a whole," he says. "We have to ensure that these other areas that we feel may be underserviced or lack a timely service are brought up to a certain level."

Many expecting mothers in Leamington and Kingsville have repeatedly said they're afraid they'll end up delivering on the side of the road if they are forced to travel close to an hour to Windsor.

The LHIN meets next on November 25.
