Residents Slam Secrecy Of Online Voting

The secrecy and security behind online voting has some Kingsville residents wanting technology exiled from the next election.

The town used electronic voting for the first time last month during the municipal election.

Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos says an active group of residents is questioning the legitimacy of online voting. "The group itself wants council to forgo any further electronic voting in the future, mostly because of the unknown security," says Santos. "Currently there have been expert reports that there are still some concerns regarding security and design around internet voting and it is challenging."

The town also received support from residents in favour of internet voting. Santos says the new council will review the town's entire election process. "At the end of the day we want democracy to be working," says Santos. "We want people to be able to do their right and cast their votes in whichever way they feel most comfortable. Certainly we want to make sure it's secure."
