After failing to declare a large quantity of alcohol at the border, a 20-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service has been fired.
Following a process that lasted four years, Constable Dorothy Nesbeth was dismissed Friday.
In July 2010 Nesbeth attempted to cross the Ambassador Bridge with undeclared alcohol. The next month she was suspended with pay and collected nearly $400,000 over the last four years. Windsor police Chief Al Frederick says Nesbeth does not owe that money back and she will not be receiving severance.
Nesbeth can appeal the ruling and would be put back on police payroll for the length of the appeal.
Frederick says officers have been kept on the force for things like theft or assault, but this case was more serious. "We do not have other officers (employed) with a conviction of deceit, which basically renders her absolutely useless to our core functions," says Frederick.
Frederick wants to reassure the public that the actions of Nesbeth don't reflect the values of the service. "This is definitely not indicative of the work that our people are doing," says Frederick. "I can't emphasize enough the fact that this was brought forward by her peers. Everyone should be comforted by that fact, the fact that her fellow officers said no, these are not our values."
