Via Rail Train Hits Car

The Ontario Provincial Police isn't laying charges after a Via Rail passenger train smashed into a Ford Focus on Renaud Line in Belle River.

Police say a 49-year-old woman was driving over the tracks when her car got stuck in the snow. She was trying to get the car out, when she heard a train coming from the east, so she got out of her car and called 911.

Just as the OPP were calling Via Rail dispatch, the train crashed into the car, splitting it in half.

Damage to the train is minor, and no one was hurt. There were 43 passengers on board at the time.

Drivers are asked to stay away from Renaud Line at the rail tracks while Via repairs and tests the signalling devices.
