Proposed 6% Lakeshore Tax Hike

The new Atlas Tube Centre, wages and utility costs are all leading to a tax increase in Lakeshore's proposed budget.

The municipal portion of the tax bill is proposed to go up over 6%, which is an extra $66 on the bill of a $200,000 home.

Director of Finance Cheryl Horrobin says Lakeshore Council knew costs were going up because of the new recreation complex. "There was an expectation we'd have a 2% tax increase for costs related strictly to the Atlas Tube Centre. That was already known by council as part of the funding plan for it."

Operating the centre will cost taxpayers $860,000 this year.

Council begins budget deliberations tonight and has two more days scheduled next week.
