Charges After Puppy Allegedly Starved

A Belle River man faces animal cruelty charges after officials at the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society seized an emaciated puppy.

Investigators visited a home to check on the 7-month old puppy's welfare. The mixed breed dog, now named Reno, nipped the owner's child, and the family was trying to find him a new home.

At the time, the dog weighed just 16 lbs. Veterinary staff couldn't find any reason for the pup's low weight other than a lack of food, and within five days, Reno gained 5 lbs, about 35% of his body weight. He'll be put up for adoption once he makes a full recovery.

The dog's owner faces one count of permitting distress to an animal and one count of failing to comply with prescribed standards of care for an animal. He's expected in court March 23.
