The Greater Essex County District School Board is working to attract international students to the public system.
"One of the biggest reasons why is to develop global awareness in our own students," says Vicki Houston, administrator for international students at the board. "We tend to know our own community, we tend to know the people that live within our own community, so [the program] provides an opportunity for our students and our staff to learn more about students from abroad."
The board confirmed the hire of its first international recruiting agent based in China at its February 3 meeting.
"I can't wait to tell my colleagues across the province who have supported us so much," says Houston, confirming recruiting agents are paid on a commission basis for every student that enrolls with the public board.
Trustees approved $100,000 in the spring to explore international student recruitment opportunities.
