FINA Championship Costs Could Increase

The cost to host the 2016 FINA swimming championships could be significantly higher than expected because of the low Canadian dollar.

When the City of Windsor negotiated the hosting of the FINA championships, the Canadian and US dollars were par with each other.

The total cost was worked out to $11.3-million US. But, because of the low value of the loonie, it's expected to cost $3-million more to make up the difference.

City of Windsor officials anticipate being able to save some of those costs by purchasing goods in Canada, instead of stateside.

Windsor Council will be asked to approve the budget and setup a hosting committee tonight.
