Politician Pointing Finger At Unions

Essex MP Jeff Watson is calling a local union's stance on community mail boxes hypocritical.

"If you look at the rural route on Seacliff Dr. between Kingsville and Leamington, for example, it was postal workers who drove the conversion to community mailboxes there because they thought it was a threat to their safety," he says. "They were fully happy that people had to travel several kilometers to go to a community mailbox."

A public meeting Thursday night in Tecumseh, aimed at keeping door-to-door mail delivery in Windsor and Essex County, saw about 100 people in attendance.

Watson, however, maintains that he's not hearing any opposition from the public about switching to community mailboxes.

He says only a third of Canadians still get mail delivered to their doors, and he thinks the public understands that the traditional business model for Canada Post wasn't working.
