Request To Demolish St. Barnabas

The Anglican diocese has a buyer for the former St. Barnabas church on Tecumseh Rd. E in Windsor, but it's conditional on the building being demolished.

The church is asking for permission to knock down the large building near Chilver Rd., but city staff is recommending against it.

Heritage Planner John Calhoun says the building has a history. "It was designed by a noted architect from London, Ontario that designed several other churches and London city hall. It's really quite a unique place for interior and exterior wise."

The Planning, Economic, and Heritage Committee will hear the demolition application today.

The city would allow the diocese to knock down two smaller buildings on the property, but not the large church. The proposal is to build a pharmacy at the site.
