Energy East Worrying Union Gas

Essex County Council is supporting a resolution meant to help protect Ontario natural gas users.

Matt Jackson with Union Gas called for council to support the resolution over the utility's concerns with TransCanada's Energy East pipeline proposal.

"It's our hope that through the regulatory process our position will be heard and that there will be a guarantee that there will be no negative impact on Ontario natural gas ratepayers," says Jackson. "This issue can be fairly easily resolved."

Jackson says the current proposal to replace an existing natural gas line from North Bay to Ottawa with a new $1-billion line at 50% less capacity could mean higher bills for natural gas customers.

The National Energy Board is set to start public hearings on the proposal in the near future.
