Civic Centre Reno Delay

The Essex Civic Centre renovation is going to cost about $1-million more than originally planned.

Additions and unexpected fixes have delayed the project and bumped the estimated cost to $6.2-million from the originally approved $5.2-million in 2013.

Treasurer Rob Maisonville blames the delay on two bad winters as well as having staff work in a construction zone.

"We've always told the contractors that we need at least two entrances open at all times and that's caused a bit of an issue as we've worked with them and them with us, as in order to work around the building and make sure that we can have access," says Maisonville.

No fingers are being pointed at the contracts on the project.

"The architect , ADA, has been very good at overseeing everything and making sure things are done appropriately," says Maisonville. "Front Construction has done an excellent job in terms of quality."

Renovations are expected to be finished by mid-June while further landscaping and parking lot work will still need to be done.
