Bad Press Hurting WEEDC

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara is taking issue with calls by a Windsor city councillor to restructure the Windsor-Essex Economic Development Corporation.

"These headlines in the newspaper do us no good, because it's hitting the boardrooms," says McNamara. "Here we are trying to bring investment into our region and here we are worrying about, 'where's the beef?'"

McNamara brought the issue up at the Wednesday night meeting of Essex County Council to ensure Warden Tom Bain would discuss the matter with Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

"All I ask warden is that you bring the message to your counterpart and somehow these continued meetings, whether they're deferred, so we can have a grandstanding-type in front of the cameras, really that's got to stop," says McNamara.

Windsor City Councillor Hilary Payne is pushing for change in the makeup of WEEDC with a motion expected to be discussed at the city's April 20 council meeting. The March 23 meeting of city council saw the development corporation's CEO Sandra Pupatello called to defend the group's work, leading to a revised motion from Councillor Payne.
