Online Contest For Outdoor Classroom

One local school is trying to take its learning outside by winning an online contest.

Holy Names Elementary School in Essex has entered Majesta's Trees of Knowledge contest where the winning school gets a $20,000 outdoor classroom.

Cathy Meloche is a teacher at the school and says students are very excited. "We would like to take out some of the asphalt . We want to put in some wood chips, trees and planter boxes so kids can ... grow their own food," says Meloche. "We would like to put a gazebo out too so that we would be able to hold classroom time outside."

Meloche says an outdoor classroom will enhance student learning. Five-year-old Ava Ruston says she's most excited about trees, "so we can have shade and they can help us breathe."

The school is one of ten finalists across Canada. You can vote online and the contest closes May 4.
