Proposed Bus To Detroit Airport

If an American group has its way, Windsor residents could soon take the bus all the way to Detroit Metro Airport.

Regional Transit Authority of Southwest Michigan wants to set up a low-cost bus route from downtown Detroit to Detroit Metro Airport. It would also offer service from Oakland, Macomb County and Wayne County.

In theory, Windsor residents could take the bus to the Transit Windsor terminal downtown, take the Tunnel bus to downtown Detroit and access the authority's service to the airport in Romulus.

CEO Michael Ford says a request for proposals is expected to go out next month, and the service could be up and running by the end of the year. He's looking for a provider that can offer the service for about $12US up to 14 times daily.

The authority is already offering the service in Ann Arbor. "The fares essentially pay for the service itself," says Ford. "The service is going into its third year and it's already grown by 75%."

The service would also require funding from U.S. governments and the private sector.
