Medals of bravery are in consideration after five Windsor Police officers helped more than eight people escape a burning house on Church St.

Officers conducting a vehicle investigation on Wyandotte St. noticed black smoke billowing from a home in the 500-block of Church St.

Sergeant Matt D'asti says a man ran out the front door of the rooming house, saying there were people inside, and officers didn't hesitate to act. "There was thick black smoke filling the lower level. At that time, they (the officers on scene) describe seeing embers falling from the ceiling, through the smoke," he explains. "They located several doors on the main floor, and began kicking in the doors, and within those doors, they were discovering several people."

Windsor police were able to determine, through speaking with those from inside the home, that the fire was an arson. They then located a suspect and arrested him on scene.
