Residents Overusing Hospital Services

Windsor Regional Hospital is tending to an $8.5-million deficit.

CEO David Musyj says this is in part because residents use the hospital "more than they should."

"As a result we are negatively impacted in our funding for that. The way that your funding is based is on the services you deliver, up to a certain extent," says Musyj. "Windsor-Essex is a high utilizer of hospital health care services, that's what the data indicates."

Musyj says government funding also caters to growing communities, whereas Windsor-Essex is fairly stagnant. "A lot of people think in Windsor-Essex, don't we have a lot of seniors coming here and isn't our population aging greater than other populations," says Musyj. "Of course it will increase the services we have to provide, but as compared to the rest of the province, just overall population, we pale in comparison."

Musyj says he doesn't expect any major program or job cuts as administration tries to balance the books.
