Mural Initiative Creating Positive Environment

Westview Freedom Academy students are beautifying a building in the school's neighbourhood as part of the Windsor police's Tag Out Graffiti campaign.

Constable Deanna Lamont says graffiti is a problem that every large city deals with, but it's most prevalent in Windsor's west end. "We figure if we can find the right canvass and provide the paint work, a lot of these students, who maybe were going the wrong way by tagging and just vandalizing, would have an opportunity to express themselves in a positive way, which is getting them the good feedback and recognition that they deserve."

Lamont says the mural at Aaron's Furniture, Electronics and Appliances on Tecumseh Road is also part of an art project for the students, who will be graded on it.

She encourages local graffiti artists to simply contact owners of buildings they wish to paint on, before doing it illegally.
