Stars Aligning For Regional Transit

Windsor's mayor is calling for politicians in the county to get serious about putting together a regional transit plan. After meeting with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne this week, Drew Dilkens says transit is clearly a priority of hers, and there's going to be a lot of money made available for it once part of Hydro One is sold for billions of dollars over the next year.  "The City of Windsor and County of Essex really need to work together to tap into these funds," explains the mayor.  "This is our chance, the stars are aligning, and we need the political will to make it happen."Dilkens says a large chunk of the Hydro One money will go toward transit initiatives in the Greater Toronto Area, but more than $1-billion is expected to be available for municipalities outside of the GTA to apply for.

The mayor thinks Windsor and Essex County could make a strong case for funding, as regional transit could go a long way in decreasing unemployment in the area.

With a strategy in place, Dilkens believes regional transit could become reality within two years.
