ERCA Gets Conservation Cash

The federal government is coming through with $300,000 to help conserve wetland near Leamington.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is matching the funding.

Essex MP Jeff Watson, with the governing Conservatives, says the money will help ERCA buy and conserve the land in the Cedar Creek Wetland Complex.

"That works out to about 38 acres of properties in Leamington near Hillman [Marsh] that will be restored into proper wetland," says Watson. "All of that of course giving us important habitat or extending important habitat for plant and animal species alike."

Watson adds extending the wetlands is an important environmental goal for the government.

"Not only for plants, but for animals and the overall quality of life," says Watson. "We need good green spaces to enjoy and be part of. We need the biological diversity that comes from that."

The federal government says in May 2014, $252-million over five years was committed to support existing and new conservation initiatives.
