Horses Just Old, Not Neglected

A pair of horses in Tecumseh many residents thought were being mistreated are simply extremely old.

"They're about as elderly as horses get," says Windsor-Essex County Humane Society Executive Director Melanie Coulter.

"We were saying if they were human they'd be getting a letter from the Queen on their birthday. They're kind of up there at the age where people say 'wow it's pretty amazing you're that old,'" Coulter jokes.

The humane society has been getting calls every few days over the summer because it's along a busy road in Tecumseh.

"Our officers have been out there more than once just to make sure that the horses are being cared for and have medical care and are not being neglected in any way," Coulter says. "And they're not. They're being very well cared for and are very loved."

Coulter says horses usually live to be about 25 years old, but these two appear to be well over that. At this point the horses can't be ridden and are there as companions for the family, she says.

Even though these horses are fine, Coulter still encourages people to call them if an animal appears to be in distress.
