City Hall Price Rises Again

Windsor taxpayers will be paying an extra $4.4-million for a new city hall.

City council voted 6-5 in favour of adding 12,000 sq ft to address future growth, bringing the total project to roughly $43-million.

Councillor Bill Marra says it's important to plan ahead.

"It may not be the politically correct decision for some, but it is the right decision for this corporation in the future," he says. "I think we'll mitigate risks for future councils, so they're not facing the kind of dilemma we're facing."

But councillor Fred Francis says he couldn't justify spending the extra money.

"Adding to the building, in my opinion, takes away from the initial scope of what the process initially called for," Francis says. "I believe in budgets and I believe that we live within our means."

In June city council agreed to spend an extra $4.6-million for some unique features.

"The instructions were not to make it grand, not to make it iconic," says CAO Helga Reidel. "I don't think we've really cross that line."
